In 1821 ,Chief William McIntosh ceded Creek Indian land south of Atlanta to the Federal Government as part of the Indian Springs Treaty.  This was distributed and sold, and came to comprise Fayette County as the 49th original county in the state of Georgia.   The land for the town of Fayetteville, the county seat, was purchased for $800 on March 28, 1823, and named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, a French nobleman who aided Washington during the Revolutionary War.
