The land that is now Newnan, GA was settled in 1828. It was once part of the Coweta Tribe of the Creek Indian Nation under Chief McIntosh, the son of William McIntosh, a Scottish gentleman, and Senoia Henneha of the Coweta-Cussita Towns of the Lower Creeks. Coweta County is one of Georgia's original counties, ceded in1825 from the Lower Creek Indians and created by legislative act December 11, 1826. The city of Newnan is the county seat, and was named after General Daniel Newnan, a soldier originally from North Carolina who went on to become Georgia Secretary of State and serve in the United States Congress. Newnan established itself in the cotton industry and as a railroad trade center in the mid 1800´s, making it one of the most prosperous towns in the state. It is well known for the Battle of Brown´s Mill that occurred in July 1864, a defeat for General E.M. McCook of the Federal Army by the Confederate General Joseph Wheeler. The Coweta County school district has had schools named as Georgia Schools of Excellence two years running, and boasts of offering students and family the highest standards available in academics and success. The district wide 2006 SAT 1 average score was 1508, as compared to the state average of 1477, and national average of 1518. Northgate HS in Newnan averaged the highest score in the county with 1546.
